Phew, I think thats my entire backloge

So I spent the last week going through a bunch of old games I made, which puts the grand total at 11. 11! Holy fuck that's a lot. Like damn.

Most of the older, gms2 games on here weren't how I found them- after getting burnt on startup crashes with project colossus I went through each of them and made sure they ran well- and more so with each game added more stuff.

For Atlas, I cleaned some bugs and made the heist level accessible from the main menu. But hooo boy this one took the cake.

Grand Stalingrad was even more unfinished than Atlas. It was literally one test room with the existing, unpolished mechanics. My past self was more interested in making the gun move smoothly than most other things in the project. To be fair the code for selecting soldiers is still pretty good, but the point is there wasnt a game to speak of. My past self must have been doing something right though, because when I tried out the test room I just couldnt help myself but want an actual level with these shitty soldiers. And that's what I did in one sitting deep into the night.

So I designed and started building the two levels- with the kind of puzze-ly nature being planned, but the darkness and the control of guns being entirely accidental.

The vision from the start was desperation, and hearing stories of soviet soldiers carrying ammo and picking up guns from fallen comrades made this an obvious choice. But I didnt expect it to play such a role- especially with the nazi AI. It came from a lack of a gun feature for them- nazis could just shoot from their bodies and wipe out all your dudes- the cunts- so I salvaged some old code so they needed guns to shoot, plus making them run and grab nearby guns. This turned out amazing though- because I hadnt clarified that the guns had to be laying on the ground- nazis would STEAL GUNS OUT OF EACHOTHERS, AND YOUR SOLDIERS HANDS. Incredible! If you quickly slide to the right on level 1, you can see pairs of them walking to a single gun- one picking them up, and then the other grabbing it anyway. And one pair in the long corridor are close enough together to constantly trigger this, so they are stealing eachothers weapon 60 times a second, only to be gunned down by you lol. This is explored further in level 2 but fuuuuuck this accident worked out so well.

Also the darkness- a single low alpha sprite layed on itself to make spooky and low vision zones gave a nice touch.

The gun theft is the only reason I'm writing this honestly I'm still hyped about that.

But yea- wrapping this up like I did with the old games- I finally added all my games to itch- a process im really happy about. It started because I needed a portfolio, but it evolved into something I'm creatively also glad with.
